One of the most worldwide well-known attractions in this island, to which many people call the "pearl of the Atlantic" and which enjoys a reputation of one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in this part of the Earth globe, is its Laurel Forest, recognized by UNESCO as a World heritage, in 1999. It covers a vast area of Madeira, being composed of trees and plants which would have covered most of Europe before the ice age, some 65 million years ago. It is also part of the Earth area called 'Macaronesia', where this kind of forest exists in a wide extension and excellent preservation condition. Two thirds of the island are Natural park, which evidences how much we value this heritage.

Just by itself, it offers a diversity of means to know its hidden corners and live unforgettable moments. One of the most well-known is walking along "levadas", irrigation channels that cross the island in all directions  and are an excellent way of plunging deep into its core. There are all kinds of walks, suitable for all preferences.

 But that is not the only way of knowing Madeira. From relaxing excursions in comfortable minibuses or coaches, while having a chance of tasting the local gastronomy, to the slightly more exciting routes in off-road vehicles, along time there has been a set of outdoor activities being developed to please all wishes. Watching dolphins and whales, sailing at sea while having splendid views on to the coastal cliffs, diving to know natural sea preserved areas and the diversity of sea life including native specimens, breathtaking views from the air while paragliding, enjoyable moments on bikes and on horseback, canyoning and more 'radical' sports for the adrenaline addicts.
